In the mid 60’s James T Kirk and Dr. Spock introduced us to the “flip phone,” from there… The Internet was created in 1969. In the early 70’s a guy named Cooper made the first cell phone call. In December 1992 the first text message was sent. In ’94 a group of engineers at Ericksson invented Bluetooth. While Bill was dreaming of “a computer on every desk and in every home” and Steve was probably thinking, “a computer in every pocket,” AT&T had a great tagline, “Reach out and touch someone”
At the intersection of computer, internet, cell phone, SMS and bluetooth in our decade we now have the Internet of things! The little computer in your pocket can actually connect with other computers, your car, your appliances, and other devices. More importantly it can help your business with what it needs most; more clients.
Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) now enables a class of devices (beacons) that broadcast a message to all BLE enabled devices within a given area. Bluetooth beacons cause smartphones to do things. While BLE Beacons are used for a whole host of services, the small business can use them to send any number of messages to your customers!
For example you can send:
- a business card,
- a link to your web page or offer,
- a link to a virtual tour of a property
- a coupon for a special offer
to every device within 100 meters.
And you can do so without the need for an app and without paying for advertising or any payment for traffic. You can generate leads and traffic for local business and do it without any special technical skills.
